The exhibition by Shahryar Nashat is part of a series of new productions presented at attitudes for the first time. This year, our emphasis is on original and challenging personal exhibitions, resulting from an intense exchange between the artist and us. Shahryar Nashat's new project Das Beispiel (The Example) involves a video, a sculpture and an installation, in a space transformed and organized by different sources of light.

Shahryar Nashat was among the artists of the Swiss pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005, where he presented The Regulating Line, a film shot at the Louvre in the Rubens room. In 2007, he took part in the H-Box project - an initiative launched by Maison Hermès and presented at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His contribution to the project was the video Plaque - screened again this year at the Art Unlimited in Basel - which presented the construction of a concrete slab reproducing the TV stage where Glenn Gould played the Goldberg variations. The work therefore involved a close connection between video and sculpture.

The video Das Beispiel, whose musical score is also drawn from Bach, emphasizes even further the interweaving between sculpture and video. This time, the sculpture (a 3m high concrete cone) is present within the exhibition - one could even say that it plays the "leading role". It is an analysis of the creative process, staged by the artist and left to the audience's interpretation, as the cone will never be visible in its entirety.
